In 1970, legendary Olympic swimming coach, James E. "Doc"
Counsilman, Ph.D., and former three time National Champion and World
Record Holder, Joe Hunsaker, joined forces to
create what has grown to become the Aquatic Design Industry.
Our two founders shared an almost spiritual passion for swimming and for
improving aquatics in America. They dreamed a new dream - and envisioned unique
and exciting aquatic centers serving every need from world-class competition to
community recreation.
Many of the facility innovations that are now standard in the industry leapt to
life from the minds and drawing boards at Counsilman-Hunsaker. Their unique
understanding of swimming and insights into swimming kinetics led them to new
solutions in both facility design and operational efficiency.
Many companies like to boast only of their victories and achievements. At
Counsilman-Hunsaker, we're a little different in that regard. We like to tell
stories about doing things for the first time and overcoming the challenging
things that unexpectedly popped up along the way. Many of the issues we
encountered and solved were often thorny and difficult. And, we learned from
every one of them.
There's an old saying. "The pioneers are the ones with the arrows in the front."
Well as the Industry pioneers; we've worn our fair share of "Arrow Shirts!"
We can truthfully say, "We've been there."
More importantly, we can confidently tell our clients what works and what
doesn't work.
Our advice, experience and expertise have saved our clients millions of dollars
on projects over the years. We've been called in on many occasions - to fix the
mistakes and problems created by others who had less real world experience.

Today our firm consists of an integrated team of designers, engineers and
operational specialists with unrivaled aquatic industry experience. We operate
on a Studio business model with a Senior Project Manager and Project Management
Team assigned to each specific aquatic project. This protocol provides quick
client response and the basis for exceptional quality control.
Our focus is client-centered and our protocols and communication are all
designed to facilitate success from Day One right through years of operation.
